I'm looking to replace my Western Digital NAS for something a bit more expandable. I like the drobos but they are too expensive when it looks like there are a few alternatives out there so I'm looking for recommendations. My requirements are:

    - min of 4 drive bays
    - hot swappable and expandable, i.e. doesn't require drives of the same size
    - gigabit ethernet
    - DNLA server
    - quite
    - not massive

Does anyone have one of the netgear's or synology's?

I got my 2-bay one from these guys

Great reviews and it's performing well - plus you get a lot for your money. Have a look at their 4 bays and see if anything looks worthwhile.

Just read your final sentence - so yes, i guess it's a thumbs up for Synology from me. This is mine
